MICRONAUTS
About
In Micronauts filmmaker Hans Busstra embarks on a visual journey into the microcosmos. The documentary zooms in on bacteria in a new, surprising way and explores how bacteria play a crucial role in our daily lives. What makes this documentary unique is that through the latest technology in science animation, bacteria are visualized on the nanoscale, making it possible to view the actual inside of a bacterium!

Partnering with microbes to tackle global environmental challenges
Microbes as a Service (MAAS) Using its premium probiotics, Winclove wants to improve quality of life of as many people as possible. However, quality of life is more than our physical and mental health. The environment of which we’re a part is also of vital importance. The planet is facing countless challenges, however. Climate change,…
Creators
In 2023 Winclove Probiotics asked filmmaker Hans Busstra to create a documentary about bacteria that would depict our common ancestor in a never before seen manner. Challenged by this proposal, production company Spiegelfilm set up a collaboration between Winclove, Busstra and the world’s leading artists in microscopy, like micro-photographer Wim van Egmond, and some of the best science animators in the world, working at Digizyme. As a team of micronauts they embarked on a unique mission: to capture the first moving images of a single bacterium on the molecular scale.
To achieve this a team of scientists built a 3D model of a Lactobacillus based on actual bio-data. This model enabled camera movements inside a bacterium that led to scientifically accurate molecular animations.
What unfolds is a universe in itself, showing us the complexity of life at the smallest level.
